Australia Student Visa Update: As of recent developments, the Australian government, under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is implementing stricter rules for study visas amid a rising number of Indian students. The changes aim to control migrant intake with a focus on English proficiency and visa extension scrutiny.

  1. English Proficiency: To study in Australia, international students will now need higher scores on English proficiency tests. The scrutiny on second visa applications is intensified, potentially prolonging students’ stay. Specific score requirements are expected to be revised, so applicants should check with their chosen universities.
  2. Work Hours: Starting July 2023, changes in work hour limits for international students are enforced. The cap is set at 48 hours per fortnight (24 hours per week) during study periods, emphasizing the primary purpose of the visa as study. However, unlimited work hours are permitted during institution-defined study breaks, and work integrated into the curriculum doesn’t count toward the cap. Postgraduate research students (masterโ€™s and PhD) face no limits on work hours.

These adjustments follow the temporary relaxation of work hour limits during and after the Covid pandemic. Previously set at 40 hours per fortnight, the new regulations aim to offer students flexibility while ensuring that study remains the main focus.

As Australia reevaluates migration levels, prospective international students are advised to stay informed and consult their universities for updated requirements.
