Australia is updating its migration program to make it better for skilled workers. The Department of Home Affairs talked about these changes at a conference in Sydney. They said the current program didn’t work well because it didn’t have clear goals and had problems bringing in skilled workers and helping businesses find workers.

By the end of this year, it will be quicker for people on a subclass 482 visa to become permanent residents โ€“ reducing the time from three years to two. This change is for all job types, and there will be changes to age rules too. Also, the limit on having two visas for short-term jobs will be removed, giving more flexibility.

Another big change is the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), which has gone up from $53,900 to $70,000 starting July 1, 2023. This is the first time it’s increased since 2013. These changes are meant to make Australia’s migration program work better and be more effective.
