Australia will make it easier for employers to sponsor skilled workers for permanent residency starting on November 25, 2023. This is part of the government’s plan to strengthen the skilled migration program.

Previously, only holders of long-term Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visas were eligible for permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS). After the reforms, holders of short-term TSS visas will also be eligible.

To qualify for permanent residency, applicants must have worked in the nominated occupation for two years with the sponsoring employer (reduced from three years).

The government is also expected to release a new Migration Strategy in early December 2023. The strategy will introduce a new temporary skilled migration system and other changes to immigration programs.
