Australia Changes Student Visa Rules

Australia has updated its student visa requirements, replacing the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criterion with the Genuine Student (GS) rule. This shift was announced in December 2023 and started on March 23, 2024. However, those applying for the Student Guardian visa will still follow the GTE standard.

Under the new GS rule, students need to answer specific questions about why they chose their course and Australia as their study place, and how this education will benefit them. These questions replace the previous 300-word statement.

Key Questions in the Genuine Student Requirement:

  1. Why did you choose this course and Australia for studying?
  2. How will this course benefit you?
  3. If you have a non-Student visa, why are you applying for a Student visa?

Additionally, the Student visa declaration has been updated to ensure that applicants understand their responsibilities, visa conditions, and limited post-study migration options.

This change aims to simplify the visa process, reduce confusion, and spot non-genuine applicants. It supports a sustainable and high-quality international education sector that benefits real students, trustworthy education providers, and potential employers.
