Australia has approved a new visa scheme to welcome thousands of Pacific islanders to the country. The scheme aims to address labor shortages and foster regional ties.

Under the scheme, 3,000 visas will be allocated to Pacific islanders each year through a lottery. Recipients will be able to apply for permanent residency. However, they must still meet certain criteria, including having a job offer and being in good health and character.

The Australian government says the scheme will not include Pacific Australia Labour Mobility workers already in the country. This is to avoid undermining the partnerships established with Pacific nations and to prevent brain drain.

The Greens immigration spokesman has stressed the importance of a fair and inclusive migration system that protects the rights of all individuals, regardless of their origin or disability.

The government plans to conduct a review of the cost threshold, which allows the government to reject temporary visa applicants with costly health conditions. This is to prevent discrimination.

The opposition has raised concerns about the lottery-based selection process, but the government says it will reduce processing times and costs.

The new visa scheme is expected to be launched in the near future.
