Immigration New Zealand is changing the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) rules. Starting from 27 November 2023, people who earn at least the average wage in New Zealand can stay on the visa for up to 5 years. People in the care workforce sector who are paid levels 3 or 4 can get a 3-year AEWV.

To stay for up to 5 years, AEWV holders must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Earn the average wage or more
  • Be covered by the care workforce sector agreement and paid at level 4
  • Be covered by the transport or seasonal snow/adventure tourism sector agreements

After the maximum stay period, AEWV holders need to spend at least 12 months outside New Zealand before they can apply for another AEWV. If you are on a path to getting New Zealand residence, you don’t need to wait for 12 months.

If you got your AEWV before 27 November 2023, you can apply to extend it if you’re eligible. Employers don’t need to advertise the job or submit a new job check application for the renewal, as long as the visa conditions are the same.
